CHARACTER
NAME: Sylar aka Gabriel Gray
FANDOM: Heroes
TIMELINE PERIOD: Just after episode 313 "Dual" of season 3
BACKGROUND HISTORY:
In season 1 Sylar was first introduced as a serial killer obsessed with taking the powers of other "special" people and leaving their bodies with the tops of their heads cut off. Sylar is first seen when he attempts to kill Molly Walker, who has the ability of Clairvoyance, but is stopped by Matt Parkman, who has the ability to read minds. He then tries to take Claire Bennett’s ability of Rapid Cellular Regeneration, and is once again stopped, this time by Peter Petrelli who can copy the powers of others just by being near them. As he escapes from this encounter he is captured by two agents from the Company. They experiment on Sylar to try to find out how his power works. He eventually escapes, killing one of his captors in the process. Sylar meets Mohinder Suresh, who is trying to find people with powers, right after killing and taking the ability of Zane Taylor. He joins Suresh, taking on the alias of his last victim, and kills the next person they meet with powers. Mohinder discovers who Sylar truly is and attempts to kill him, but fails. Peter comes and together he and Suresh manage to get away from Sylar. Sylar then takes the ability to paint the future from Isaac Mendez and paints a picture depicting a man exploding and destroying New York. He visits his mother and tries to show her his powers and accidentally kills her. He then takes the power of Induced Radioactivity from Ted Sprague. He and the main characters, including Matt Parkman, Noah Bennett, and Peter Petrelli, meet in Kirby Plaza where Sylar is apparently killed by Hiro Nakamura who has Space/Time Control.
In season 2 he wakes up in the presence of Candice, who has the ability to create illusions, and proceeds to kill her. He finds himself unable to use his powers anymore and therefore is unable to take Candice’s power. He wanders through Mexico until he meets Maya Herrera, who has the ability to emit a deadly poison, and Alejandro Herrera, who has the ability to cure his sister’s poison. After they cross the border into the US, Sylar and Alejandro get in a fight and Alejandro is killed. He hides Alejandro’s body and convinces Maya that he had just left them. They eventually meet Suresh, and Sylar gets him to help by threatening Molly. Mohinder tells him that the Company gave him a virus that took his powers and that he has an antidote. Elle Bishop, who had the ability of Electric Manipulation, comes and attacks Sylar. He escapes and takes the antidote to the virus that had kept him from using his powers, but only regains Telekinesis.
In season 3 Sylar attacks Claire Bennett and gets her ability. He at first invades the Company where he kills Bob Bishop, who had the power of Alchemy, and tries to kill his daughter Elle Bishop. She emits a powerful shock wave which knocks him unconscious. Noah then locks him in a cell. He is soon recruited into the Company when he is convinced that its leader, Angela Petrelli, is his mother. He is partnered with Noah Bennett to track down some villains who had escaped when Sylar attacked the Company. He takes some powers of these villains, but seems to be becoming more of a hero than a villain at this time. This changes when Noah tries to kill Sylar. He changes allegiance to Pinehearst, which is run by Angela’s husband Arthur Petrelli, and becomes partners with Elle Bishop. For a while an eclipse occurs that takes his powers again. At this point Noah tries to kill Sylar as revenge for hurting his daughter. He chases Sylar and Elle to a supermarket and after a short fight he cuts Sylar’s throat. Lucky for Sylar, the eclipse ends before he dies and he regains his powers just in time to heal the wounds inflicted by Noah Bennett. He then kills Elle and starts spiraling into a psychotic killer once again taking powers. He first takes the power of lie detection from Sue Landers. He returns to Pinehearst and interrupts Peter’s attempt to kill Arthur. Sylar finds out Arthur lied about being his father, and he kills Arthur. Sylar goes to the Company and traps Angela, Claire, Noah, and Claire’s mother Meredith. They release the prisoners to hopefully stop Sylar, but he defeats them all and takes Noah and Meredith prisoner. He confronts Angela and she admits to lying about being his mother, but that she knows who his parents were. He tries to force her to tell him their identities, but Claire stabs him in the head and he is left inside when the building explodes.
TIMELINE SUMMARY:
Sylar is taken just after the explosion mentioned above. At just before this point Sylar had just killed a building of people and had confronted Angela. She had confessed to lying about being his mother, but said she knew who his parents really were. Before Sylar can find out their identities, Claire stabs him.
PERSONALITY:
The primary part of Sylar’s personality is the “hunger” he feels to take the abilities of others, which comes as a result of his power of Intuitive Aptitude. He is absolutely ruthless when he is trying to take the power of another person, never showing an ounce of mercy and mutilating the body to get what he wants. He feels the more powers he has, the more “special” he is. He can become absolutely caught up in this idea, which is another reason for his merciless killings.
He can seem incredibly cold and solitary, but in reality he is constantly latching onto parental figures. He seems to have a need to gain the respect of these figures, and the attitude and methods he employs to gain that admiration causes his personality to change. He occasionally shows emotions of love and gentleness with those close to him, but these have always ended up fading and ending with him killing those he had previously shown affection for.
Sylar can also be incredibly calculating. As a result of his Intuitive aptitude he can see how things work, and this helps him control the flow of events to his advantage. He has set up another person for a crime in order to take their power, and manipulated Maya Herrera into believing he was taking her to Suresh in order to get her cured when he was really just trying to regain his own abilities and then take her ability.
SPECIAL ABILITIES: Sylar’s base power is Intuitive Aptitude, which allows him to see how things work. This makes it easy for him to fix objects that are broken and allows him to take the abilities of others if he gets access to their brain in order to find out how the ability works. So Sylar has collected and lost quite a few powers. The power Sylar primarily uses is Telekinesis. This allows him to move objects with his mind. He uses Rapid Cellular Regeneration, which allows him to recover from almost any wound. He also has used Alchemy, which allows him to turn any object into gold. The latest power he acquired that he uses is Electric Manipulation, which allows him to generate electric bolts from his hands.
SAMPLE
THIRD PERSON:
Sylar had experienced many things in his life, but this had to be one of the strangest yet. He had just woken up aboard some kind of ship in some tropical paradise. The last thing he could remember was Claire stabbing him in the head with a shard of glass and the building exploding.
His first instinct was to assume he was in heaven, but he quickly discarded that idea. He had killed so many people that there was no way he could get into heaven. So hell then? Maybe. Once again he could no longer use his powers, but he was getting used to losing them now. But with the loss of his powers, the hunger was gone as well.
He looked around the boat and realized he didn't know where he was or who any of these people were. But maybe this was a good thing. Coming to a new place with no past? Maybe he could start over here, build a new life. He had done terrible things, but maybe no one here knew about them. If nobody recognized him, then he could do whatever he wanted.
The only problem was that he still had no idea who his parents really were, so he'd have to find a way to get back and find them. And to do that, he'd have to get his powers back, and maybe some new ones. A slight smile came over Sylar's face. Maybe there was a little hunger left after all, and maybe that meant some of his powers were as well.
FIRST PERSON:
What is this place? Did they send me here? They should have learned by now that they can’t hold me anywhere forever.
My powers are gone? Oh well. I’ve lost them and regained them before, and I’ll do it again. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get some new ones before I leave this place.
And I will leave this place.
